David Facey: 17/9/1940 - 31/10/2008
Dave Facey HON FMPA and MPA Past President passed away on Friday 31 October 2008
Please leave your own messages of condolence below
I cant believe that Dave isnt around anymore - I always thought he'd keep on going 'til he was 100 or more. He always seemed larger than life; brilliantly creative, weird sense of humour, a very kind man who always had time to talk (as long as you didnt bore him)!
I always remember him moaning and groaning at everyone at my wedding just to get them to stand in the right places. And afterwards he said that the photos were his present to us.
A genius and a lovely man who will be very much missed.
Laura Valentine-Slack, Combwich, Bridgwater
Dave ...you made our special day all the more special, I'm sure you did the same for many, many others. You will be so very sadly missed, that goes without saying. All our love Emm & Kev Lambe

Jaz,
I am so pleased that you are going to follow in your grandfathers footsteps. I am sure a lot of his creativity will be passed on to you.
I know Dave would love to hear what his beloved grandaughter is saying about him, I can just see his smile now reading your message.
Any grandad will be sorely missed, yours was very special indeed, as you said, everyone knew Dave Facey
There will be plenty of photographers around that will help and encourage you along the way.

David, you told me that you were as fit as a fiddle!! I am truly saddened by the news, and the world has lost a deeply unique, humorous and talented photographer. I am privileged to have met you and that you got to take both mine any sisters wedding photos. It such a shame that you never got to know we are both expecting, and now we have to fins someone else to take the first baby shots. love and best wishes to your family. Helen Davidson

I bet you and Dad will be musing. Shall always remember that wicked twinkle in your eyes after you had made some outrageous comment - fabulous! To have been at the top of your profession and receive the affection from so many is an inspiration about life. Will always remember the hilarious evening, with Leon, when you told us the crazy stories of your visit to New Guinea. God bless, I know you're being well looked after. Love and best wishes to yours,
Pervaiz, Penzance
Although I am Gutted and just can't quite believe that Dave's not here anymore,I also feel very privileged to have met and known Dave as well I as I did.
I have so many fond memories of Dave, on joining the MPA he took me under his wing, taking me on many weddings.
It was quite simply awe inspiring to watch him work and the way he put clients at easy with his wonderful sence of humour.
I was never quite sure what he would say next, but he would always have me hanging on his every word, maybe for a little gem of information or just to have me creased up with laughter.
Dave was an amazing inspiration to me, a fantastic mentor and above all a great friend, I will definitely miss him.
Simon Pryor, Yeovil
DAVE FACEY ? TRUE GENTLEMAN AND LEADER IN HIS FIELD
TIM BERRY, HULL
We only found the white wicker framed mirror I promised you in the back of our store a couple of weeks ago! Dave... a truly colourful photographer - even in black and white. One of the good guys of the industry - always full of ideas and innovations, and always keen to help others improve. May wherever you have gone on to be filled with sporty fast cars and loud rock music. A character fondly remembered here.
Jon & Sue Eaves, Studio Decor, Beaminster, Dorset
Dave, you had a knack of making everyone you came into contact with feel so special, as if they were your best friend. Thank you for making our family feel that special. Our wedding photos and the many photos since have always had great meaning to us, my husband said that he wouldn't even marry me if you wouldn't or couldn't take our wedding photos. I wish that we had spent many more afternoons yabbering & jamming the day away in your studio, drinking Eileen's wonderful cups of tea. You have been an inspiration in so many ways, we love you and will miss you more than we can say.
Love to you Eileen and family. We will see you soon.
Carole, Tim & Faith, Burnham-on-Sea
Dear Dave, you have been so supportive over the years and will be so sadly missed. A truly unique character and it was an honour to have known you. I am so sorry Eileen and we will be thinking of you. Still cherish all the photos that you have given to us and the kids have still got Dave's Kodak Clock! Such a wonderful photographer, respected in his profession, but also such a wonderful person. Lots of Love

Hey Hun,
So glad I saw you at Newcastle, you made me laugh as usual. Loved your work, but most of all I loved you!
Love to all your family X
Julie Beshaw , Kings Langley, Herts
Dave, you were and always will be…
A brilliant and innovative photographer.
Witty.
Kind.
Thoughtful.
Caring.
Mischievous & cheeky.
Fun.
Always willing to share your knowledge and help others.
The only one I know that would take photographs at the hospital whilst having a heart attack!
I know that you will be having ‘fun’ wherever you are.
The industry will never be the same without you.
Will miss you, I will cherish the memories, goodbye my friend.
Condolences to Eileen and all of his lovely family especially at this difficult time.

I was lucky enough to spend a couple of hours with Dave in his studio and it was one of the memorable mornings of my 4 years as a photographer. He was wonderfully irreverant, sparky, and with a great outlook on life as a photographer. Fabulous stories and a wealth of experience. I am so glad that I had this opportunity & thanks to Dave's family for the tea. I hope that tomorrow goes as well as possible for you all. Lots of love.
Emma Duggan, East Grinstead
David you were my brother in law for 25 years - but our paths only crossed a bare five times which was a great tragedy as we had a rapport. The last time I saw you was at Chris' (my husband, your only brother) funeral last year - he too went suddenly - you both would have hated long drawn out goodbyes. Einnee (your niece) is working very hard at her degree in Photography - you were her inspiration - she wanted you to be her mentor and we can only hope that she has inherited just some of your genius, if not your dress sense and penchant for the "flowery language"!
Tina Facey, Southampton
Dave, so sad to have lost you as a friend and a genious photographer, though everywhere I go in my house your brilliant work is looking back at me. All those pictures of my "ugly girls", the more you called them that the more they loved you. Also some years ago I was going through a bad time and you took me to Kilve one afternoon, took some photos (which with your wonderful knack me made look much better than reality)and the result was you restored a lot of my confidence, I will always love you for that.
So thank you for all the beautiful photos and the laughs, you have been a good friend to all my family over the years and we will never forget you.
Love to Ei and the boys
God bless
xxx, Bridgwater
I first met Dave around 20 years ago and had the pleasure of serving with him on the regional MPA committee. The first thing you noticed about him was the sparkle in his eyes, here was a man determined to enjoy life to the fullest. His photography reflected the man he was, quirky, off the wall, thought provoking, passionate, innovative, fun loving and quite simply brilliant. No doubt on his way to heaven, he would have had St. Peter sprawled across those pearly gates in some thought provoking, yet beautiful pose.
Dave, you touched thousands with your ideas and zest for life and now, sadly, you are gone.
My heartfelt sympathy to Eileen and family.
RIP my friend.
Carol Steele, Torquay
Dave,
You were always great company & a lovely person.
I'll never forget your generosity.
God bless you.
Love to Eileen & family.
Jeff Simants, Exeter
Daves pictures were unique He used to tell each bride before a wedding he doesn’t know what he’ll take but it’ll be different
Recent pictures I’ve seen showed a fat nude lying across a sofa with large tattoos on her arms & rings & studs all over her face-not glamorous but different-typical Facey Another showed that same girl sitting fully clothed with a slim attractive girl standing in the background with her 2 fingers up
When on the beach he couldn’t resist making up a pack shot out of the sand When he was a judge I remember his appearance always made him stand out from the other Fellows They say life has to go on but it is difficult to accept

Everyone has great stories and memories of Dave, he brought us laughter, even when he was ill. When he had his first heart problems he was still taking photographs on his hospital bed. He was a one off a huge character. Years ago I attended one of his seminars on P.T.O. it was sooooooo funny I've never forgotten it. He'll be missed by us all.

Dear Dave I was very sad to hear that you had past away and it has really screwed with my head as i will miss our chats your humor your direction on my photography and photoshop you always had time to chew the fat put me on the straight and narrow there were no airs and gracess with you were so easy to talk to and now i will never have that chance and honour to work with you as we talk about or to buy you the drink that i promist I dont think you knew how many people lives that you touched with your images or personality and warmth If I ever talk to people about my photographic heros then you are right at the top I will miss you and our talks very much but I will have the memories of those times to look back on But there will never be another DAVE FACEY miss you
Alan Gurr, Launceston Cornwall
I am so sorry to hear about Dave's passing. He was a great character and very generous with his time. When he heard that I was moving into a new studio in 1996 he offered to give up his precious time to 'officiate'at the opening, along with other photographers and local dignitaries. He will be sadly missed in the profession. Bless you Dave.
George Ody, Minehead
To my knowledge, I am the very last person that David photographed in Newcastle a few short weeks ago. More importantly it was my final opportunity to talk with the maestro himself about life, The Universe, special guitars, his cars and of course photography!
David was a breath of fresh air, always teasing, opinionated, brilliant, a true original..there are not sufficient adjectives. A great loss to the industry, I will miss him most as a good friend.
Condolences to his family at this difficult time. See ya up there Maestro!
Alan Hunter, Poole
Had only met dave once at the last ten to one enjoyed his talk got his cd of images fantastic photographer.
during the breaks at ten to one I would pop outside with dave where we would both have a few fags.A great character with a great sense of humour gave me some good advice.
Thanks Dave
William Andrew, Harthill
One of the first photography legends I ever met. He was always teasing people, I never new when he was really joking. It was only after a few years that I realised that he was one of the most gentle and genuine souls I have ever met.
May you bring joy, fun and chaos to all that you meet on your new journey.
The world of Photography will miss you, but thanks to your images, you will be immortal.
May God bless you and bring peace to your family

We didn't have the pleasure of meeting Dave in person but his reputation preceeded him! We feel we have been cheated. Our loss, heavens gain. Our sincere sympathy to Daves family. RIP

The first time we had the pleasure of meeting David at the Kodak Gold Awards left a lasting impression on us. Once met never forgotten. A real character. Will be sorely missed in the photographic profession. Our condolences to his wife and family.

I find it hard to believe, only the other week you said you were fine after the last operation and promised we would have that curry,
How could you lie to me like that!
Dave, you will be greatly missed.
My sincerest condolences to Eileen and family.
Rob, Lincs
Although I personally only met you a couple of times and very briefly, its very clear from the messages here and elsewhere that you were a wonderful person and will be much missed by everyone who knew you, I am only sorry I never got the chance to get to know you better.
My condolences to your family

Liisa Hilden-Parsons, Leicester
On reading some of the other messages you can repeat what has already been said, I know that when being with David on seminars he was an inspiration to many and one who will be missed but never fogotten by all that knew him.
Derek Gatland, Stanmore
I never had the pleasure of meeting David but have always admired his work. He was a true artist who will be missed.
My condolences to his wife and family.
Stephen Pugh, Sevenoaks
David was judging a print competition at one of the first MPA meetings that I attended. I couldn't understand why there were so many sweaty palms and pale faces with looks of nervous expectation...until he started to speak about the images.
How enlightening it was to hear him talk about those pictures, David's way with words influenced me to stay around - it was both encouraging and so very refreshing to hear someone speak solely from the heart, as it should be, no pussy footing around and telling exactly as it is.
I remember my daughter asking me when she first met him if he was a rock and roll star, 'in a way, yes", was my reply. The world is a less honest place without him now and he is wholly irreplaceable. My heartfelt condolences and sympathy are with his family at this deeply sad time. Bella West.
Bella West, Shaftesbury
David became a personal friend after he photographed our wedding in Edinburgh while I was touring and speaking through the UK. Our photographs are treasured by us as Davids memory. We brought David a pair of snakeskin cowboy boots from Nashville and you would have thought we had given him a brick of gold. This world is going to miss one of the greatest photographers and characters ever created. He shall be a big part of our life and memories as long as we live. I just wish he could have lived long enough for me to have given him the mandelin he always wanted. Thanks to the MPA for have given Jackie and I the opportunity to have been able to meet such an unforgetable person. David and the MPA have been one of the best parts of our lives and to David "rest in peace my friend" and to the MPA thanks so much for all that you have contributed to our lives.

Brian Lakin LMPA , Kingsbridge, Devon
Dave was a great friend and is sorely missed. I keep picking up my phone to call him.....
A unique personality and such fun to be around. I had the honour of shooting a couple of weddings with Dave, we had such a laugh (I got a lot of abuse) and shot some great work. You really had to spend time shooting with him to see what an amazingly creative he was.
Dave had a lot of faith in me and I only hope I can realise some of what he thought I am capable of.
The photo on this page was taken by Kevin. Dave is sat on my sofa, while I puff smoke into the light from the window. When I look to my right it is as if he is still sat there - if only he was....
I can imagine him now speeding around the clouds in his wing powered Messerschmit bubble car - they wont know whats hit em up there!
Dude love and miss you - you star
My thoughts go to Eileen and his family - keep strong.
David
David Goff, Southampton
It was a pleasure to have known David.
As well as being a great photographer he was a lovely man. You always felt good when you were with David, and he encouraged and inspired everyone. He didn't care who people were, just what they were like. He was always willing to give his time to support photographers and he was always honest and open in giving advice, to photographers and to suppliers.
A great bloke.
Our thoughts are with you Eileen, and your family.
Tony & Hazel Eatough, Kings Langley
Such a sad loss.
David was an inspirational photographer, with so much talent. At the same time, he was a down to earth character, the true salt of the earth. Never one to stand on ceremony, he would always call a spade a "Bloody shovel".
He would willingly give of his time and experience to new, aspiring, photographers, asking nothing in return.
He was his own man and only expected that people took him at face value (though many came to realize that there was so much more beneath the surface).
I am proud to have been associated with him, for many years and honoured to be one of his "Mates".
God Bless, Dave. Your legacy will remain in photography for a long time yet.
Derek & Terri Booth

David Facey was also A R G B (a right good bloke)
How sad to see his untimely end.
He was a brilliant photographer and his early work was simply outstanding. I always described him as a living legend.
He now to me will always be a legend.
He will surely be missed by many.
May he now rest in peace.
John McDonald
John Mc Donald, Dorchester
Dave will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. His 'call a spade a spade' attitude made him what he was and gained him the respect he deserved. Never afraid of what people might think of him, Dave was always prepared to give back to an industry that served him so well and one that he enjoyed so much. A true cheeky chappy with an amazingly creative brain.
Darron Hartas, Eastbourne
A tragic loss for everyone. I had the pleasure of Dave's advice on several occasions. He was totally an individual and his views and attitude to photography helped put me on my way. Dave didn't mess about. His enthusiasm lifted me. A one off. A genuine star.
He will be sadly missed by us all. Our thoughts are with his family.

Dave Facey was a customer at Avoncolour for many years while I was Managing Director and Ron Munn the manager.. Dave was certainly not the easiest of people to understand but he was a real live character. He was a super accomplished photographer with a laid back style that often belied his competence. Ron Munn our manager at Avoncolour and I often talked about Dave. We are sorry to hear of his passing and wish all his friends and family our very best wishes. We have lost one of those rare species. A talented photographer and a character to remember. Not often in my career did I meet talent of this caliber.
Bill Bowman and Ron Munn, Bedforshire
I met David only once for a couple of hours when I went to see him at his studio for my Licentiate Panel. Within those 2 hours, we became good friends. He has promised me that he would come to Exeter to meet me at my studio for coffee. Sadly, this never happened. When I heard the sad news, I just couldn’t stop my tears for him. I lost a good friend who had a great personality. I will miss and remember him for the rest of my life.
On the same day, David also introduced me to his wife Eileen and his dog. My condolences to Eileen and all his family.
Aladdin Gulec, Exeter
Truly an inspiration to us all....you will be sadly missed David..I suppose I now have to depend just on Kevin for critique......bye mate

I may not have known Dave for that many years, but he had an incredible presence, a real character a true gentleman, an accomplished guitarist and a fantastic photographer. A lovely man I will never forget.
Peter Rabin, North Somerset
What sad news. David, you will be greatly missed. On the occasions that I met you, your irreverent approach to almost everything trampled any boundary that limited creativity. You inspired me and removed mystique from a lot of what we do. My life has been richer for knowing you.
Sincere condolences to David's family.

Dave Facey - The original. Hysterical memories of 'The Richard Gere Award'in Tunisia, The 'smoking kills' dead bird in 'Pets', the car crash into the back of the brides car, and sleeping in Jamies Sky Bed. We all loved you, you were a real person, not many of us will be missed when we are gone, as much as you are. You had an impact on us. Did you plan the date so you can come back and haunt us on Haloween every year? Only you could have planned that, I bet you are chuckling about your timing. We will come and say our goodbyes to you next week and most sincere best wishes to Eileen and the family and your lovely doggy

Always a pleasure to talk to and I always left his company with a smile on my face, loved his attitude and views on life, delighted he came to Newcastle this year as it gave everyone a chance to see him and enjoy his company for the last time, we were all dressed in black and the bugger was dressed in white, typical.
My condolences to his family.
RIP David

When they made David, they broke the mould. He was a one off, a character to say the least. Fantastic bloke, great photographer with an imagination that ran on a very different track. Knew him for over 20 yrs and always staggered by the fantastic images he could produce.
He will be greatly missed.
David Guest, Portishead
Dave was a huge character to me.
He was always welcoming, always generous with his advice and always incredibly kind and supportive.
He pushed and helped to mentor me through my Fellowship and his images and his "shoot from the heart' approach to photography will always be my inspiration.Words fail to give a glimpse of all that he was.
Simply put he is a legend and will be sorely missed.
My condolences to Eileen and his family.

Dave was such a character, it felt like he was here forever. I will really miss the fun and laughter we had and inspiration in his work, he certainly was a 'one off'. Heaven won't know what's hit it, but boy, won't it now be a lively place...when you met Dave you knew God had a sense of humour...He will be sadly missed by so many people from the top to the bottom, because Dave treated everyone the same...his influence both as an artist and friend was widespread, there will be no one of his like to come past our door again in this sad PC world...long may he stir the heavens...keep a chair warm for me...

I was terribly shocked to hear that David had passed away, Bill and I absolutely adored his sense of humour. We spent a week last November with him in Malta and had a great time. David was a terrific entertainer, great raconteur, proud to count him as one of our friends, we will miss him.

Dave, you are an absolute legend and I feel it to be a priviledge to have known you. I can't believe that it was only a couple of weeks ago that I sat next to you for dinner at the BPPA awards talking music and sorting out your Iphone so you could get to the games you so badly wanted to play ;)
The Wessex Region were very lucky to have had you on a number of occasions as a judge and speaker and they have all without a doubt left an impact on our members (some of them are still recovering!!)

Our industry has lost one of it's great characters and renegades. There were no rules as far as David was concerned and he pushed the limits in work and in life in general. Only a few months ago, we were talking outside a seminar in Bradford looking at his 'pride & joy' Porsche parked on the yellow lines. He joked about his illness and reflected on the fact that he had certainly had an interesting life. I only hope he realised how well respected he was by his fellow photographers. A true Artist who will be dearly missed.
David Moffitt, Rotherham

Andrea Johnson, Preston
I have personally lost a great friend who always inspired me with his charisma, charm and creativity. David truly was a " Special One ".
I know he inspired and brought great warmth to the MPA and photography in general, his character was one to behold and admire, he cared not how rich anyone was, everyone was equal in his eyes.
Dave was sp special, how many people would have the nerve to walk into Loxley's colour lab, chat with the directors and proceed to light up and smoke a cigarette in front of the directors. I could see the look on their faces, nobody said a word, afterwards I said to him, you have a nerve, he replied, I just wanted to see their reaction!!
I will miss Dave very much indeed.
Kevin
My thoughts are with Eileen and his family at this time. I
Kevin Wilson, Wimborne
It is our sad duty to announce that Dave Facey HON FMPA and MPA Past President has passed away. Dave was known as the 'Ozzy Osborne of Photography', a maverick who was never afraid to break the rules, but most importantly Dave was a friend and a supremely talented photographer.
Dave's legacy to us all are the stunning images he has left us with and the happy memories of times shared - we had the pleasure of his company at the British Professional Photography Awards only two weeks ago.
Our deepest condolences to his wife Eileen and family.
Colin and Linda Buck, Darlington
